Hello, My Name is Maxie Sipple Britt I am Married to Thomas Britt. My Father's name is Rufus Sipple, married Lillian Lester, my Grandfather name was Sid Sipple, Married Nora Staten, my Great Grandfather name was Burke Sipple married to Victoria (Cannady or Kennedy). I am so glad to read all about the "Sipple's". We were always told that our Great Great Grandfather came over from German to Ellis Island, New York. Any information for me would be wonderful.

I was looking through the web and came across your post on the website regarding sipple. my father's name was Ernest Sipple but later changed it to Pike (looong story). there are alot of unanswered questions regarding his family because we were not raised by him but what we understand is that he was born in 1929 in Ohio and he was named after his father and would have a son by the name of Ernest Sipple who we believe would now be in either his late 40's or early 50's. what is interesting is that he had a total of at least 7 son's by 3 different women and named 3 of them Ernest, 2 Robert and 2 David. we think he has a brother in Kentucky but i'm not sure of his first name and a sister Karen who is very young. he was missing a piece from one of his ears. we do have pictures of him from both his younger years and from right before he died which was approx 4 years ago in rocky mount north carolina. he spent time in california, texas and north carolina and was in and out of mexico. other then this, we don't know a whole lot more.

Hi, This is cool, I did not realize that their are as many Sipple's as there are. I am told that I am mostly German and Swedish and my Grandfather is 91 years old and is still alive and he is mostly German. We are from the western NY area and there are only about a dozen of us around. It's just neat to see that there are Sipple's all over the place.

I would like to buy her book about Essex and maybe include her within my bibliography of my book coming our next year about the Folklore of Essex. I am chairman of the Brentwood Writers' Circle and also part of the Society of Women Writers & Journalists with which she may have connections and I am sure my members would enjoy hearing Mavid talk. Hi, I'm John Sipple and I grew up in Bainbridge, New York. My father was Lloyd Henry Sipple and my grandfather was John Lewis Sipple. My understanding is that our branch of the family came from southern Germany around 1850 and settled in the Catskill mountains of New York. My grandfather decided to find a farm that had no rocks so he moved the family west to the Susquehanna River valley (Bainbridge) in 1920. Later he and my father put together a maple syrup business that became one of the largest in the country (which isn't very large actually). I was a manufacturing manager with Procter and Gamble who moved us to Georgia in 1972. We have been there, North Florida, and the Atlanta area since - with the exception of 2 years in Canada and 3 years in Germany with the company. I'm married to Kathie, have 3 grown daughters who are married, and 7 grandchildren

I have been searching for my dear friend, Violet Sipple. Her husband's name is Phil Sipple and they had two boys. One of them is Dana and I think the other is Peter, but not sure. We were the closest of friends back in the 60's, then lost track of one another. When I spoke to her last, in about 1965, she was back east somewhere, near some of their relatives and Phil was working in a factory, I believe. He had been in the air force, stationed in California, when we knew each other. Do you know these folks? Any help you can give me would be so greatly appreciated. I have been searching for so long. Thank you and God bless you, Effie Oldham PS She would recognize my first name immediately, but I had a different last name back then.

I would agree that Sipple isn't a very common name in the US. I am related to the Peter A Sipple at the top of the page, my grandfather was one of the thirteen he mentioned. I have three aunts and two uncles, however my brother and I are the only males bearing the Sipple name from this branch. Right now we're up here in New Jersey.

My name is Delores Ann Sipples(born 1969) of East Providence, Rhode Island. My great grandfather came from County Cork, Ireland in the mid 1800's. He migrated to Danielson, Connecticut. He had several son's Leo, Harold, John and daughter's Katherine and Mabel. Most of his children ended up moving to Rhode Island. Leo Sipples was my grandfather. James Robert Sipples(born 1928) is my father. I had always thought we were probably the only Sipples family but from this sight I see there were more descendants than I thought there were. I was told the name is German Irish.

Like most of the other Sipples, I descend on my father's side from a German family Sippel who settled first in PA in the 1850's and then moved on to northern Wisconsin. No doubt they found more land there for their dairy farms. My great-grandparents, buried in Menomonie, Dunn County, Wis., were Conrad and Elizabeth Sippel. Their large family included John, Henry, Anna, and my grandfather Peter, who later changed the spelling to Sipple. Great Uncle Henry moved to California; Great Aunt Annie to Texas where she grew oranges. My Dad, Elmer Sipple, was the last of ten children born to Peter and Emma Wunderheiden Sipple. My father was the only one in his family to complete high school; he attended Stout Institute in Menomonie, taught briefly in Chicago, and moved to Cleveland OH where he taught for nearly 40 years at the Hawken School. This is where I grew up. I am an Episcopal clergyman (mentioned in Janet Sipple's squib above) and served as head of three independent schools. My wife and I have two children, Jennifer and Matthew. I'm glad to be part of the Sipple website and would be pleased if anyone reading this thinks she/he might be connnected with our branch of Sippels.

I am trying to find people who might know my family tree. My Grandfathers name was Frank Sipple who married Mildred Sapp. They had 3 children, James F Sipple, Nancy Sipple Bishop, and William Harry Sipple (who was my father). My father married my mother who is Ruth Ann Jones, and they had 3 children..myself, William Harry II and Jerry Lee. I have a family tree heirloom in my shed that states, our name was once Greenlee when coming to America. I only show 1 date of Death and that is for a man named William E Greenlee who died November 11 1892. Has anyone ever heard of this person and could you be part of my family? I am one of the many descendent of Johann and Anna Christina Sippel of Oberlangsfeld, Germany. Johann and Anna Christina had 6 boys and 3 girls and moved to the United States. One of their sons, Charles, married Susie Hughes and they had 3 kids: Beth or Rebecca, Dean, and Karl (my grandfather). There are still many Sippels in the Illinois and Michigan area, as I understand, but not too many out here in California. The spelling seems to be overwhelmingly with an "el" and not "le." It would be great to connect with any Sippels/Sipples, especially from the Oberlangsfeld strand.

I am researching a John Klaus (perhaps Claus) Sipple that was born in Hesse Kassel abt. 1838. He married a Mary Limroth born abt. 1835 Germany. They were residing in Brighton, Monroe Co., New York (near Rochester, New York)in the 1880 NY Federal Census. Their children were: Emma, Louisa, Emily and Justus Henry. I would like to find out the names of John's parents and anything about his wife Mary Limroth. Don't know if they were married in Germany or in the USA. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I married Gerald Sipple in 1953. We were dairy farmers all our working years. He was the son of Raymond Sipple and grandson of William Sipple. We have two sons, James Richard who lives near Menomonie and Charles Robert who lives in Waverly, Iowa. Raymond's grandparents, Conrad and Catherine, came from the area of the Rhine Valley near Heidelburg, Germany. Their name was spelled Sippel and we don't know for sure when the spelling was changed from "el" to "le". They settled for a short time in Pennsylvania before coming to Dunn County, Wisconsin. Most of that branch of the family stayed in this area, where we also live today. Gerald, usually known as Jerry, was one of the first 36 persons in the USA to be chosen to be on the National Dairy Board. He was on several dairy boards for 37 years, having to give up the position because of health reasons.

I am decended from Garret Sipple (nee Supple) who landed in Accomack County on the Eastern Shore of Virginia in 1667. He was an indentured servant who got on the Dove in Dublin, Ireland. He was 17 years old. Garret married Mary Calvert (b. ~Jamestown in 1650--daughter of Christopher Calvert) and had four sons. Garret, Mary and family moved to Delaware (around Dover) where he became a wealthy landowner.

Entries before September 2002 (oldest first)
  • Peter A Sipple - Sipple is not a very common name in the US either. The original spelling was Sippel and was changed four generations ago, probably due to a mis-spelling in church records. My great, great, grandfather came to the US in 1856 from Alsace Lorraine. I'm in Emmaus Pennsylvania and work for a company named Air Products and Chemicals. I am the oldest of six children, my father was the second oldest of thirteen, and my grandfather would have been the end of the line had he not had his thirteen. I have put together a family tree on an Apple based system and am in the process of converting over to an new IBM based system. Email 75166.2736@compuserve.com

  • Kyle Sipples - I was searching Lycos to see if my page was listed yet, and I saw an entry for yours. I was curious because my father's name is Peter Sipples. Our surname used to be Sipple, but was changed to Sipples when my family emigrated to the United States. I am told that the name is Irish in origin, and is based on the name of a county or town, but I don't know much more than that. In the U.S., this name is extremely uncommon. Amongst relatives that I know of, my brother and myself are the only male Sipples who might still have children. Email sipps@ix.netcom.com.

  • Edgar Sipple - My dad and his folks were from the hills of Kentucky. I left there in 1964, joined the US AIR FORCE, was discharged and later moved to Alaska, where I an now residing. I retired from the State of Alaska in 1989. I now live in Soldotna, AK. I have 3 children (2 girls and a boy) who still reside in Alaska. I love to fish I am starting a computer business. Email edsipple@ptialaska.net.

  • Kathleen Sipple - My name is Kathleen Sipple from Crofton, MD, USA (near Washington D.C.). I thought you might find it interesting that my grandfather's name was Peter Sipple (and was spelled Sippel before it was changed at Ellis Island - at least I think that's how it happened). He came from Germany, but I'm not sure when. Most of the Sipple's that I know live on the East coast of the U.S.A. - mostly in New York and New Jersey (but are spread around a bit more now: CA, TX, CO, FL, DC, Germany, to name a few). As you can probably tell from my first name, I also have Irish blood - my mother is all Irish, and my father is 1/4 Irish (but I believe the `Sippel' part is German). I am the 5th of 6; 4 males, and two females... so there are more `Sipple' families being formed all the time!

Peter Sipple from Emmaus, PA is my cousin (his father is my Dad's older brother) (I understand he posted to your page). Email katsarah@aol.com

  • Beth Ann Sipple - I am a graduate student working on my doctorate in neurodevelopment at Temple University. I am about 3/4 German and about 1/4 Irish. I have heard tale that there is also some Hungarian in the mix. I am 24 years old. I have always wanted a hugh extended family and this web page might give me that information. Email ayla@astro.ocis.temple.edu

  • Peter Sipple Rowen - I've seen the U.S Census pages from 1840 and 1850, and they show my Pennsylvania, USA ancestor Peter Sipple as being born in Germany (1840) or France (1850) (does that mean Alsace?) Either way, the Sipple name seems to have come from the Continent, not Britain. There was a Peter Sippel (sic) from Bremen who came through New York City in 1833; don't know if he was my ancestor, but he was the correct age, and surname spellings were often Anglicized by American immigration authorities in those days. Email prowen@seanet.com
  • Peter also found this interesting quote from TIME magazine (19 Aug 1996, p. 17), in an article called "Tragic Heroes":
Oliver Sipple, the Vietnam veteran saved Gerald Ford's life in 1975 by deflecting the arm of Sara Jane Moore as she aimed a .38 revolver at the President. In the ensuing media rush, reporters revealed that Sipple was gay. That news resulted in his ostracism from his family. Sipple filed a $15 million suit against seven major newspapers but lost. He died alone of natural causes in 1989, in a dingy San Francisco apartment.

  • Janet Sipple - Sipple is a married name for me, belonging to Charles Henry Sipple of Stateville, North Carolina who is my former husband. I have two children, Harold Karl and Elspeth Marie Sipple who will be interested in the connection as they mature into adults. There is also a Peter Sipple living here in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania who attends my church. Janet A. Sipple, RN, EdD, Bethlehem, PA 18015. Email 103226.2451@compuserve.com

  • Karl Sipple - I am the son of Dr. Janet A. Sipple of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania who was previously married to my father, Charles Henry Sipple now of Statesville, North Carolina. My Dad has completed extensive research on the Sipple's and would be glad to share his findings with others and would like to benefit from your research on the family. Email 103226.2451@compuserve.com. I am a 24 year old truck driver hauling across the USA. I would be interested in calling Sipples across the USA as I travel. If you are willing to hear from me or perhaps meet me as I travel, please send your name and telephone contact to my address above. Look forward to meeting all you SIPPLES out there!
  • Andrea Sipple - I live in Coatesville Pennsylvania. My paternal grandfather, John Sipple, I think has Irish background. My father, Rich Sipple, has 2 brothers and 3 sisters. However, my brother is the only Sipple left to carry on our name. He's only 11. Email Maggiem728@aol.com

  • Warren Sipple - I live in Blackwood N.J. U.S.A. My father was Archie Sipple, and he and his two brothers,Harry and John, are originally from the Dover, Delaware area. They were all born in the early 1900's. As far as I know, a majority of Sipple's have settled in the northeastern part of the U.S. I have two son's, Kyle and Matthew. Email wsipple@aol.com

  • Ken Sipple - I live in Coffs Harbour N.S.W. Australia. The Aussie family tree has been printed in 1986 it goes back to Christoffer & Hannah Sippel who migrated from Germany 1854. Born in Unterkoskau 21st November 1812. Email sipp@bigpond.com

  • Canadian Sipples - Hello from Michigan, USA. I have some friends in Canada (Ontario) with the surname Sipple. I don't know if any of them are on the net or not. None of them are from Canada, but maybe they will find you and write to you. I will keep checking periodically to see what information there is about the name. (I think it's a facscinating name). Thank you for the information. deannalpn@aol.com

  • Larry Eugene Looby - My grand mother was ANNA BARBARA SIPPEL born 22 Nov 1885 in Eau Claire, WI. She was the 7 th child of 12 born to Joseph William Sippel born 8 Jul 1850 in reckenhoffen, Bavaria Germany and Anna Barara Grant (GRAND). Joseph W. Sippel immigrated in 1871 to sauk City Wisconsin and was the child of Peter Sippel and Babara Balz. I'm told that the original Sippel Farm is still in use (house and all) and in original condition. I never would have thought I would ever see a SIPPEL page as searches went empty. I the Eau Claire area there are three separat Sippel families with the other spelling Sipple. Glad to meet you all! lloobywi@ecol.net

  • Karl H. Sippel - On May 10, 1525 'Hans Sippel" with four other leaders of the peasant uprising, after they had been tricked to come into the walled-in city of Eisenach (Thuringia/Germany), were publicly hanged in the market squre of Eisenach. This was a great event in the history books of the former DDR . Therefore, a fairly large sized cast iron plaque in memory of these martyrs has been errected by the functionaries of the former DDR. I have a black and white picture of it. Besides that, I have a whole slew of Sippel information..it seems the tribe has its fairytale beginning with the Saxon king Siegesbold. later on a king called Alfred von Suppelsburg (about 1070) emerged 'out of the woods'..as far as I know there are no documents of verification that this was really the beginning of the Sippel tribe (but it makes good story-telling). During the Middle Ages (so it is rumored) a Professor August Sippel supposedly wrote a theses on space travel. Personally, I have copies of church registers going back to the 17th century. My sister, she lives in Kassel/ Germany. collected them during the last twenty, or so, years. If you are interested to have copies of my copies, you would be welcome to have them. Just let me know. I can assure you, your German 'Cousins' are a respectable and smart bunch of people who work very hard and never give up on things that capture their interests. lloobywi@ecol.net (Vero Beach, FL USA)

  • Andrea Dori Sippel - I believe the origin of the name is the old German word Zippe, which means a tribe or a family... My name is Andrea Dori Sippel, and I am a classical musician (violist) currently living in Los Angeles, Ca. I am the daughter of Gerhardt John Sippel (born Aug 27, 1922 in Norden, Ostfriesland, which is in north Germany on the Dutch border). I have three brothers: John, Gary and Robert. My father is the son of Johannes Sippel, born Mar 29,1896 in Ostfriesland.. My grandfather's parents were Elisabeth (birth mother) and Johann Sippel, who were from Mainz. My grandfather was raised by his stepmother and had numerous brothers and sisters, some of whom went to Argentina and Brazil (I met cousins in Sao Paolo twenty years ago -- very funny, very feisty people-- who told me that while my grandfather was fairly angry with his father and therefore moved to New York, their father, my grandfather's brother, was even angrier and therefore moved much father away, to Brazil! I hate to think of what might have gone on with the people who moved to Argentina...) One of my grandfather's brothers was a chef, another, named Heinrich, remained in Ostfriesland. My grandfather flew a biplane for Germany in World War I; his sister Martha was a nurse in that war. My grandfather emigrated with his wife and two children (besides my father there is my Aunt Martha, who is two years older, I believe) to the United States in the 1920's. dori-sippel@webtv.net

I don't really have any information on the family tree just that grandad Sipple (Bill) met gran in ww1, he was a handsome army man from london and she a rather robust aberdonian. love marrage kids and happiness soon followed as they made their home in edinburgh. My father tells me that the name has german origins which you already know. he has also heard that it means to sip, or drink delicately which amuses me considering the drinking habits of the sipples up here. • James R. Sipple - From what I was told, SIPPLE was original GERMAN, and they migrated over to the U.S. They had later become most famously known as PENNSYLVANIAN DUTCH people. I live in South Carolina now with my parents DONNA and GERALD R. SIPPLE. I have two brothers living in PA yet, their names are John and Gerald Jr. They both have 2 children. My father has only one sister that had carried that last name of SIPPLE and she has been married a few times. It was explained to me that someone in the family tree had really been fruitful and multiplied. Since then, I was told by almost all my relatives that there were two was to determine if someone was of the family tree. 1. If they have the last name of "SIPPLE" they are most likely related at about a 95% chance. 2. Everyone on my fathers "SIPPLE" side of the family have these curious little trademarks. Either one or both sides of the neck, just underneath the base of the ear is a little bump. If you place your head on your shoulder, and feel the exposed area of the neck, you should feel a bump. This bump is actually an inverted gland that everyone has, but is most prominent in the sipple family to be exverted, rather turned around so that it sticks out. Not everyone has a prominent bump, but if you can feel it, and you'll know when you find it, please let me know. If you definately feel it, your definately related. Howd'y cous'! I like this site. I had always wondered how many "SIPPLE'S" were out there. Entrpriz3@msn.com

  • John P. Spires - My great great grandfather was Henry John Sipple (or Sippel). He was born in Hamburg, Germany and immigrated circa 1840. They moved from VA in a covered wagon and went to St. Clair Co., IL, near Belleville. It was slow going. The trip took eleven months. They took the wrong route in Indiana and ended up in Iowa. Had to turn back into Indiana to pick up the right trail. Enroute their yougest child, Levi, died of exposure. He was buried in a homesteader's yard in Indiana. One of their daughters, Anna Elizabeth, dob: 3/6/1846, married my great grandfather, George August Frick, of Hecker, IL in April 1865. They moved to Williamson County, IL., where they raise their family. jpspires@colla.com

I was born in 1951, graduated from UW-Stout, and work at 3M-Menomonie. My father William R. farmed in the town of Spring Brook. Born: April 17, 1926 Died December 20, 1968. My grandfather William A. was born in 1880 and died in 1960 His father Peter was born, I think in Pennsylvania in the 1850's. His father Conrad was born in the 1830's in Heidelberg, Germany. All four of these men worked al of there adult lives, within two miles from where they are buried. They are buried in the Iron Creek Cemetary. Once they moved here they very seldom traveled more than 25 miles away. Conrad's son Henry sold lubrication oil for Howard Oil, McAllen Texas. Henry's son Emory was an Insurance Saleman. Peter's son Elmer graduated from Stout Institute and traveled all over. But, the land was a magnet for everyone else. I still farm, i my spare time.. LRSipple@webtv.net

  • Nanci Sipple - I need some help. Our sippl's were from Austria, settled in Wisconsin and then a gg uncle moved his family to PA. around 1900. That included him(Frank) his wife Mary and two sons--Frank and Herman. Our family lost track of them and just recently I found the two boys on 1910 census and they were living with a step brother. I guess Frank died, Mary remarried a Mr. Klose and then they both died and the step son was raising the two boys. I found out both boys had died and wrote to the library in PA for their obits but so far nothing. I would like to find out who our relatives are in PA.Frank changed his surname to Sipple. There are so many Sipple's-Sippel's in PA that I don't know where to begin. Thanks for any help. trsearcher1@yahoo.com

  • Jess Matson - My Great Grandmother was conceived on board a ship on the way to Australia. Apparently her father was Captain Sipple, the captain of this ship. It's quite a confusing story actually. We always thought her last name was Seppelt, the name of a wealthy wine family in South Australia where my family has lived for generations. Recently I saw my Grandmother's birth certificate and saw that her mother's maiden name was actually Sipple. Now we don't know whether the Captain's name was Sipple, or whether that was just a romantic story. If you want more exact info I'll get my dad to contact you. He's quite interested in tracing the family history, and as you say, Sipple is quite a rare name. jess_matson@hotmail.com

  • Dan Scott - Sipple is a very familiar name for me. My grandfather was Orville Sipple and I enjoyed many Thanksgiving Family reunions with the Sipples. When I was around 17 my Aunt Edith also found another branch of the family in Kentucky. A combined reunion was held with over 200 hundred people attending. Aunt Edith published a book entitled "Deep Roots" which traces the Sipple Geneaology. Most of the Sipples that I know personally live in Southern Ohio in Clermont and Brown Counties. Dr. Jerry Sipple, is my uncle and lives in Bethel Ohio. cdscottnc@aol.com
